Yakima Valley Quilter’s Guild Presents: Quilter’s Academy 2025

Ever wanted to learn to quilt? The Yakima Valley Quilter's Guild has a new cool interactive class just for you!

Disclaimer: I am a member of the Yakima Valley Quilter's Guild, so I have an insider's peek into a new community class, Quilter's Academy: Intro to Quilting.

I blame the Central Washington State Fair for getting me hooked on quilting. If you've ever been to the fair, you know how they have all the quilts on display for showing off and for judging inside the Modern Living Building? Well, right before you go inside, there's a table with the sweetest ladies in the world who offer memberships to join our local quilter's guild.

They Listen and They Don't Judge

I couldn't pass up the chance to join a quilter's guild at the Fair. There was just one problem: I didn't know a lick about sewing! Fast forward one year later, I've taught myself how to sew plus, I've already made three and a half quilts!

Last year at the quilt guild's fair booth, a few of us guild members taught people how to make a 9-patch for free.

I was given 13 of the completed 9-patch quilt blocks made by people at the fair, and I've turned it into one of the quilts that our guild will be donating to foster kids in the Yakima Valley.

WHAT IS THE QUILTER'S ACADEMY?

The Quilter's Academy is a series of sewing classes that will teach you how to make a quilt. The intro classes are free and then if you want to enroll in the Academy class, there is a small nominal fee to enroll. Expert local quilters will teach the community about the history of quilting in the Yakima Valley and then take a deep dive into how to make a quilt from start to finish. (It's not as hard as I though it would be to make a quilt!)

One more cool thing to share with you: Each month, members of the Yakima Valley Quilter's Guild sew a "Lotto Block of the Month" according to that month's selected pattern. Then at the next month's meeting, we have a drawing and somebody gets to win all of the quilted blocks they can use to make a whole new quilt! So much fun!
