Sailor Moon Live was an Amazing Experience to the Anime Fan in Me
I was invited to see Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: The Super Live in Seattle at the Paramount Theater the other day.
I'm here to tell you, the anime fan in me (weeb, or otaku if you're old school like me) thought it was just about the coolest thing to see live here in the United States.
I love live theater and especially musicals. This was, at its core, a musical. Originally something only available in Japan but they made it work for the US audience.
It's subtitled which I appreciate. If people grew up with the dubbed US version they won't recognize some of the names as they use their original Japanese names and not the ones made up for American audiences
The case of this show features the five guardians who include Sailor Moon, a 'man in disguise' (if you know Sailor Moon you know who I'm talking about), and an evil queen along with an ensemble cast who play all the supporting characters.
The 5 main characters go through costume changes from typical school girls to superheroes back and forth pretty regularly.
They advertise this show as being 2.5d as they have a giant screen in the background. The timing of everything is amazing. When someone throws a kick or punch on stage, you see the impact on the stage behind them. It's really cool how it looks.
The screen also shows the subtitles of what the characters are saying which is great. You'd think it'd be a huge distraction but it's not.
The show ran about an hour and a half but then after the story part of the show was over we were treated with several songs sung by the characters. Highly recommended.
