The Phrase People from WA, OR, Can’t Stop Saying Incorrectly
I would say, "I'm not one to judge..." but here I am writing an article about it.
There's a phrase I used to hear every so often. Not all the time, but once in a while that's grammatically incorrect. It just sounds weird come out of someone's mouth. It's a simple two-word phrase that, when said, tells you they were probably sleeping during English class in school.
It's a phrase that, maybe not you, but I'm sure you have or have had a friend who used to say this. It either got on your nerves but not enough to educate them on it or you just glossed over it as, yeah, it sounds close enough.
It's a phrase that spell check apps like Grammarly (widely regarded as the best) doesn't even recognize it as being incorrect probably due to how often it's used.
What's the phrase people in Washington, Oregon, and California say wrong all the time?
"I Seen"
"I seen that new thing at the store."
No. No you didn't. You saw it at the store, you didn't seen it at the store.
"I seen the reviews of that restaurant were good."
No. No you didn't. You saw the reviews. Or, quite possibly, you had seen or even have seen the reviews, but you didn't seen them.
The words "I seen" needs a word in between like have or had. Or just replace seen with saw. "I saw your cousin at the store." Perfect. "I seen your cousin at the store." Unless you're quoting them word for word and they were wrong, not so much.
Speaking of seeing my cousin at the store, check out these stores!
