Things begin to return to normal Today after fighting the the Evans Canyon Fire which remains at 70% contained at 75,817 acres. The Yakima River Canyon boat launches and campgrounds open at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday along with State Route 821 through the Canyon. Evacuation orders in Yakima and Kittitas counties will be lifted at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Many firefighters are being released to fight other fires in other parts of the state. State fire officials say last week there were more than 1,000 people helping to battle the large blaze but that number is now closer to 600. Five homes were destroyed last week but none were lost over the long Labor Day weekend. Officials from the State Department of Natural Resources say this week as they get more control of the fire they'll begin to transition the responsibility back to local fire districts.
Some closed areas will begin to reopen this week. The Yakima River Canyon boat launches and campgrounds will open at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
Firefighters continue the battle Today hoping to make more progress to fully contain the fire.
