Where have Chicken Cracklings Been My Whole Life?
I was in Prosser and stopped by a gas station near the freeway exit before heading back to Yakima. I just needed some road trip snacks. This place was a larger store right next to the Prosser exit rest area. This particular location happen to have a Krispy Krunchy Chicken vendor that has great chicken, chicken strips and other sides including biscuits and even items like red beans and rice. I figured chicken strips was safe enough to drive and eat, something finger food without having to think too hard about it.
That's when I noticed this in the back of the deli case. They said it was chicken cracklings. Basically, fried bits of just chicken skin. I mean, how can I pass that up?
Now, to be fair, I do like pork rinds. Not as much as some and sometimes I'll go for years without eating even one but once I do, I'll eat the entire bag in one sitting. Especially the large, seasoned ones you can get at the fair.
But chicken? Well, I do love chicken skin. In fact, sometimes I'll bake chicken at home and, when I take the chicken out to prepare it for whatever meal I'm making, I'll eat the skin by itself as a snack for the chef.
That's the best part about cooking is the snacking along the way. You get the best bits before giving your family what would be the leftovers.
It was literally just that, a basket of fried chicken skin and I was all for it. Are there other places in Yakima that sell this?
I found this at the Shell station next to the Prosser WSDOT rest area and will most likely stop by again when I'm in the area.
