It's been about 19 years since Yakima had an official Drive-In Theatre. Many of our audience might not remember how much fun it was. In fact, way back in the "good old days" they use to charge by person, so people would stash their friends and family members in the trunk, just to save a buck. Or my parents lied and they charged by the car, and my parents just wanted piece and quiet on the way to see the double feature of Weekend at Bernie's 2 & Body of Evidence. (Those are the two movies I remember seeing at a drive-in all the way back in 1993). Well, just like cast iron cookware, vinyl records, & flip phones... what's old is now new again... the drive-in theatre!

Starting on Saturday August 8th, Yakima Parks & Recreation will be offering drive-in movies on August 8th, 15th & 22nd. Just make sure you're at the Gateway Complex at Kiwanis Park by 8:30pm, otherwise you'll miss the action! On the 8th you can catch Sonic The Hedgehog, Aladdin on the 15th, & Rudy to wrap it up on the 22nd. Due to COVID-19 precautions, there will be no concessions offered and please only bring family members in your vehicles. If you do end up needing to use the restroom facilities, make sure you have a face mask.

In a press release, Parks & recreation Manager Ken Wilkinson said: "We are so excited to be able to offer these drive-in movies, especially since we previously had to cancel the Outdoor Summer Cinema series due to the state’s COVID-19 restrictions.” Now that the state's Safe Start Program Phase one has been modified, let's watch some movies! “We do ask the public to please be patient with City staff as this is a new venture for us.” For more information on the upcoming Drive-Ins or all of their other videos and virtual programs, check out their Facebook Page, or visit YakimaParks.com.
