If you’re one of those weirdos that put cantaloupe on their pizzas, you might be making people sick(er). I know, you’re thinking, “cantaloupe on a pizza? Don’t you mean pineapple?” Get with the times; it’s 2023, so live a little with your toppings. Think outside the square box with the circular food we eat in a triangle. All joking aside, cantaloupe is under a recall because it could make you sick.

Sofia Produce, LLC, operating out of Nogales, Arizona, issued a recall of all sizes of fresh cantaloupes that are labeled with the “Malichita” label and packed in cardboard containers. Sofia Produce (under the name “Trufresh”) issued the recall due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued their own notice of the recall at FDA.gov.

The recalled cantaloupes were distributed to Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida and Canada. Other states may have received the produce in question thanks to various retail markets.

As of this writing, there have been no illnesses linked to the cantaloupes in question. The recall was announced after a Canadian Food Inspection Agency safety investigation resulted in a Canadian recall.

What Should I Do With Recalled Cantaloupes?

If you have any of the cantaloupes in question, you should dispose of it safely or return it to the location where it was purchased. If you are unsure if the melon you bought is one of the ones in question, reach out to the retailer.
