With thousands of books at our local libraries and millions of them and short stories at our fingertips, thanks to options like LIBBY and different reading apps, there is no shortage of favorites.

What are yours? What did you grow up reading?

The late great comic Mitch Hedberg once said, "Any book is a children's book if the kid can read!" Of course, he's right, but which books are better for kids? The ones that educate and inspire.

I battled illiteracy and dyslexia growing up while also suffering from numerous ear infections, leaving me roughly 80% deaf. Reading was difficult for me to learn and comprehend.

My parents got me reading comic books, which helped me learn. I then progressed to Star Wars books.

Knowing who the characters Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, etc., were helped me visualize the story and adventures of these heroes. They taught me light from dark, good from bad, and definitely inspired me.

I was a little late for the Harry Potter scene. I've read the books and seen the movies. I love them, but they weren't my bread and butter and didn't hold the spell over me like they did for many kids born in the 90s.

Is the Wizarding World still enchanting readers today? Yes, of course, those stories are, but they aren't Washington, Oregon & California's favorite, especially when it comes to children's books.
