Proposed legislation in Olympia that would raise the legal smoking age to 21 in Washington is gaining public support, according to a new poll of 500 voters.

The survey was conducted by independent pollsters at Stuart Elway Research and it shows that 65 percent of those asked are in favor of raising the legal limit.

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is urging lawmakers to pass the bills introduced in both the Senate (SB 6157) and House (HB 2313). The state of Hawaii recently raised its smoking age to 21 and the cities of New York and Boston have done the same.
