Tax Refund Taking Longer Than You Expected? Here’s Why …
If you're like me, you're in the group of earlier filers -- the day I have my W-2 in hand I am filing. This means I usually file no later than the middle of January. So why have I not gotten my refund?
Those who filed with an Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit will have delays in their refunds because of The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act (PATH ACT), the law that was passed in 2015 to protect taxpayers from identity theft and tax fraud. If you claimed either credit, your return cannot be processed and refunded until after Feb. 15. The delay gives the IRS enough time to stop fraudulent claims.
So how do you find out where your refund is? You can use the IRS's mobile app or you can use your desktop to view the status of your refund. They usually update the site overnight, so please do not stress yourself out by refreshing the page a billion times.
