Washington ranked very high on states that are best for environmental protection in the United States.

Charity website Smile Hub ranked every state in America and found that Washington State came in 2nd place for best states for environmental protection. Only California did better than Washington State coming in 1st place.

The criteria they looked at was environmental protection ranking, energy consumption and waste disposal rank and emission and pollution contributions ranking.

With these in mind, Washington State is 2nd best state for environmental protection.

To take it even further, here's where Washington lands when looking at specific criteria.

  • 3rd – Share of Population Using Green Transportation
  • 6th – Share of State Land Designated for Parks and Wildlife
  • 6th – Energy Efficiency Score
  • 6th – Industrial Toxins per Square Mile of Land Area
  • 8th – Environmental Protection Charities per Capita
  • 19th – Total Tonnage of Landfill Waste per Capita
  • 23rd – Vulnerability to Climate Change

Smile Hub goes on to mention how many people in the United States think the environment is getting worse and worse while the government doesn't seem to be doing enough to protect it as much as they could. People can do their part on an individual basis and if everyone pitches in, we can do our part in protecting the environment.

So far, Washington is doing a great job and if we all keep it up, we might hit that number one spot by next year.
