It's a fear that some have. What happens when you luggage gets lost.

Fortunately, today's flying technology your suitcases get scanned so many times to keep track, they can back track and track it down pretty easily, but what happens if it doesn't make the same flight as you?

It's happened to me a few times including just this past weekend.

Here's what happened and how I got them back.

And even got some bonus flight miles for my troubles.

First, a joke:

"I'm checking in for my flight to New York but send one suitcase to Chicago, another to Miami and another to Los Angeles."
I'm sorry, sir, we can't do that.
"Why not? You did last time."

Well, they can't all be a prize winners.

Coming back with a layover in Seattle, my flight to Yakima was boarding right when my current flight was landing. Soon as it landed I had to high-tail it to my gate which also involved taking the train.

By the time I got there, the Yakima flight was already boarded except for myself, my wife, and another guy on our same flight who also had to run to catch the last flight to Yakima.

We got on the plane.

Our bags didn't.

Since we checked our bags, they were still on the other plane and didn't make it to the Yakima flight in time.

These things happen.

This particular instance, I wasn't the only one, either. There was another family who didn't grab their bags, either.

If this happens, know it's not the fault of the people at the airport so no need to yell at them.

Just tell them you're missing your bags and they'll put in a report.

You can also see you're missing your bags on the baggage tracker on your Alaska Airlines app.

Also, if you fly any time out of Yakima, get that Alaska Airlines app. It's super useful.

As I figured, the bags arrived on the next flight into Yakima which is that afternoon flight.

In retrospect I should have just went to the airport just in case but, in this case, they said they'd call when they'd arrive. Well, they called, but then said the airport was closed so I'd have to wait until 11 p.m. to grab my bags.

I did and they gave me a number to call to claim my '20 minute baggage guarantee' as if they're not at baggage claim in 20 minutes you can get miles towards your next flight which is nice. Consider it like an inconvenience fee.

So, thanks to today's technology, bags do show up missing at times but it's not nearly as often.

Best thing you can do is use those free tags and right your name and address on it as if it does get lost, they'll know where to ship it.
