You May Notice a Change to Ballots in Yakima
If you're a registered voter, depending on which school district you live in it's likely you'll be getting a ballot in the mail soon to vote in the February 8 special election. Yakima County Auditor Charles Ross says levies are on the ballot in Grandview, Highland, Mt. Adams, Union Gap, Wahluke, Wapato, West Valley and Zillah School Districts. The Naches Park District is also asking for support for a special 2-year levy. Many of the districts are asking for renewal of ongoing levies to help fund the schools with no increases or changes.
Auditor Charles Ross says the tab has been removed for more efficient counting
Ross says if you do receive a ballot you might notice the lack of the detachable tab on the ballots. Ross says his office is making a few small changes to the "way ballots are folded and inserted with the instruction page in the outgoing packets. We do this with the goal of reducing the time it takes to handle each ballot." He says during the last election there was a high number of voters who tore the bottom of their ballots while trying to remove the stub or detachable tab.
Ross says because the ballots were torn they didn't flow through the machine
Ross says that caused a big delay during the counting of ballots "because the tear in the ballot went through the barcode that the scanner requires to validate and read the ballot." So the stub was eliminated. Ross says "although we understand that some voters used the stub, or tab as a receipt for voting, it was actually used for quality control purposes during the ballot packet inserting process. Since our print vendor is not allowed to print anything extra on the face of the ballot, the barcode that used to be on the stub is now on the insert and it is used to ensure that the correct ballot style is being inserted into the correct envelope."
There's still a way to confirm you've voted your ballot
If you would like to confirm that we received your ballot, or print a receipt for voting, voters can visit www.votewa.gov and see personalized information about their voting record and the status of their ballot for the current election.
