• President Barack Obama signed an executive order announced Thursday calling for a five-year plan to track highly resistant bacterial infections.

    The executive order came as a response to bacteria that is resistant to antibiotic treatment, a problem that’s been noted to kill 23,000 people each year.

    In the executive order, Obama said “The FDA, in coordination with USDA, shall continue taking steps to eliminate the use of medically important classes of antibiotics for growth promotion purposes in food-producing animals.”

  • Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced last Thursday $68 million worth of funding for 540 Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects Nationwide.

    The funding includes loan guarantees and grants for solar energy to create jobs, promote energy independence and advance the use of renewable fuels. Secretary Vilsack made the announcement to highlight USDA's investments in rural renewable energy projects.

    Vilsack stated “Investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency will continue the unprecedented increase in home-grown energy sources and American energy independence we’ve seen in recent years.”
