Rik and I competed in Northwest Harvest's third annual Carve Out for Hunger celebrity pumpkin carving contest over the weekend.

It's the first time I've competed, but Rik is a seasoned pro who informed me that the team to beat was KNDO!

So, I went in with a game plan. The rules say no stencils, but you can bring whatever is needed to make your pumpkin a winner. That can be anything from paint to crafts supplies -- even your own carving tools. They provide the basic carving set, but as Rik learned, the little carving tool doesn't work well and he ended up breaking his.

The guests vote for the winning pumpkin, and they can purchase more tickets to stack the vote for their favorite! At the end of the night those voting entries are used to raffle off our pumpkins. Lucky Chelsea won our pumpkin.

This year's celebrity pumpkin carving winner was .... KNDO! Again! What was funny was that we did something similar with our pumpkins. Now, I want to win that trophy next year, so any helpful ideas are welcome!

The important part is that the event raises enough to help Northwest Harvest provide close to 70,000 meals for families here in Yakima.
