Alaska Airlines Replacing Starbucks with Stumptown – Interesting
Alaska Airlines, based in Seattle, has been slowly removing elements of Seattle in their flights.
As soon as last year or maybe it was the year before they replaced their local IPA beer offering from Fremont (very Seattle) with Anchor (California -- totally not Seattle). That was, as it seems, the start of more changes.
Alaska Airlines just announced they're going away from Starbucks (just about as Seattle as you can get) with Stumptown Coffee (Portland, Oregon. Again, not Seattle.)
It seems like an interesting choice as Starbucks is, like it or not, the standard with coffee. They're everywhere, they're consistent, people love them as they know exactly what they're getting with them. It's Starbucks. There are Starbucks locations in Seattle where you can sit at Starbucks, look out the window, and see two more Starbucks locations.
I'm taking nothing away from the quality of Stumptown Coffee at all, I just think it's an interesting choice since Alaska Airlines is based in Seattle so it seems to be extra Seattle. In their safety guide in the seat pocket in front of you, they even feature a cartoonature of a man wearing a Sub Pop shirt (a Seattle based record label known for hosting bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney and a lot more)
According to Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci:
Stumptown stands out as first class.
Well, we'll see about that. If you prefer your coffee while flying Alaska for your in-flight beverage, know that it won't be Starbucks for much longer. There's also nothing stopping you from just grabbing Starbucks at the airport to bring on your flight with you.
