I had the pleasure of visiting the students of Whitney Elementary (also my Alma Mater) this morning. The students had written letters and made a presentation focusing on why Yakima needs a zoo.

I read through the 20 plus letters and graphics ans chose Ayla's as the winner. She made some very good points about why Yakima needed a zoo. She offered a variety of animals in her zoo along with a cafe. She is well deserving of the first place award. She had great hand writing and seemed like a bright kid with a bright future.

Even though the project was not a real proposal it taught the students that they can talk and interact with their community leaders and make a difference. Alya is hopefully going to come present her idea to the City Council and see what happens.

I'm glad their teacher Mrs. DeBoer reached out and made this project more than just a grade.
