HANGING FAKE OWLS: A MEAN PRANK OR A PREDATOR DECOY?
The other day when I walked out of my apartment, I looked up and started screaming. There was a huge fake owl hanging up on a piece of twine that was tied around the one of the gutters outside my door. Any human could clearly see that it was fake after inspection, but in that moment, I froze in my tracks because I thought it was real. This fake owl was the size of a large eggplant, and it had a hollow look in it’s beady golden eyes.
I love owls, but this fake old thing scared the crap out of me. My immediate reaction to seeing the fake owl was that someone was trying pulling a mean prank. I thought about that phoney-baloney owl as I drove myself to work and thought out loud, “There must be some hidden meaning behind that fake owl, I just know it!”
When I arrived to work, I quickly did a Google search for “fake owls”. I wanted to know why people hang up fake owls in the first place.
WHAT DO OWLS PREY UPON?
Beautiful, gorgeous Owls prey on mice and the like. They also scare away other smaller birds from nesting nearby. An old wives tale says that if a woman dreams of an owl, it means she is pregnant. (True story, that actually happened to me!)
WHAT DOES A FAKE OWL MEAN?
Other birds steer clear away when they see an owl. A REAL OWL, not a fake one! Typically, when someone hangs up a fake owl, they are trying to keep birds and other creatures away from the property. Good luck with that!
DO FAKE OWLS ACTUALLY WORK TO SCARE OFF CRITTERS AND BIRDS?
Here is the long and short answer:
Nope, fake owl decoys do not work. I have seen this with my own eyes. The fake owl that has been hanging up on the gutters in my apartment courtyard has not been working to scare any smaller birds away. In fact, there is a very large family of little birds chattering in their nest inside some gap in the awning over my apartment door, as we speak. I hear them having house parties on the weekend mornings when I am trying to sleep in late. Those little babies are loud.
We need a better decoy than Mr. Owl O’Faux.
IN CONCLUSION…
So basically, if one hanging up somewhere, don’t touch that fake owl. If someone puts up a fake owl near you, that means they are sick and tired of hearing those loud small bird son of a guns! %#$! They are fed up. They are over it. However, much like a scarecrow that has three CROWS sitting on top of it, birds ain't stupid. The fake owl decoy doesn’t work!
Don’t Touch That Fake Owl!
