This one is a bit of a mystery. If anyone can help track the owner down, I am sure we would both appreciate it.

On Sunday morning, coming back from church, I noticed something on the side of the road. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the colors, Red, White and Blue.

I pulled over immediately and walked over to find a random poled American flag, on the road on 40th near Lincoln. After looking around wondering how it got there, I picked it up and walked it back to my car.

At first I was upset. I revere the flag. I have multiple family members who fought, bled and died for the greatest symbol of liberty and freedom man has seen. So it’s heartbreaking to sit it just sitting on the side of the road while hundreds pass by without a care.

As I walked back to my car, I thought about the famous picture from Iwo Jima, where 5 soldiers risked their lives to raise the American flag in the midst of battle. Now some one has thrown away, misplaced or it fell out of the back of someone’s truck.

I was kinds surprised to see so many cars passed by and did not rescue our nation’s symbol of freedom from the gutter. How long had it been there? What happened to it? Why was it there? Did someone throw it away? Is someone missing their flag after arriving at their destination?

As soon I got home I researched what to do with it a "fallen flag". I know there are specific ceremonies for “retiring” a flag after it has touched the ground. I found more info on American Legion website. When asked, “Does the flag have to be destroyed if it touches the ground?”, this is what I found.

"Care should be exercised in the handling of the flag, to protect it from becoming soiled or damaged. However, you are not required to destroy the flag if it touches the ground. As long as the flag remains suitable for display, even if washing or dry-cleaning (which is an acceptable practice) is required, the flag may continue to be displayed."

She is still in good shape. So, I am going to hang onto until I can locate the owner. This is where your help is needed. I would love to find the rightful owner – if they exist. If not, I will proudly display it. I have a couple places in mind.

In the meantime, I found it on near 40th & Lincoln Ave. Sunday Morning around 10:30am. If you know someone who missing a flag or, you are the owner, please reach out to me. I would love to personally hand it to them/you. Just know, the owner knows this – without going into detail, there was an accompanying component to the flag (not pictured) that should be identified to properly claim ownership.

Any help in your regard is appreciated.
