Utah has some of the most strict liquor laws in the United States and a new law that started this year could be an idea that others may take notice and bring to their states.

Is Washington State next on the list?

Utah's Strict Alcohol Laws

Here's a few rules about alcohol in the great state of Utah that may confuse some.

  • All beer off tap must be 5% or less, including IPAs.
  • You're only allowed 3 drinks per visit.
  • You're only allowed 1 drink per hour (at least at one place I personally visited).
  • You may not stand and drink at the same time. Must be sitting at the bar or the table. If you're at the bar and want to be seated at a table, a hostess or server must bring it to you.
  • Utah's BAC for a DUI is .05% vs. the .08% as it is everywhere else.
  • There are many others, too, but that gives you an idea.

What the Extreme DUI means in Utah

A DUI of any type is still a DUI. You drive over the legal limit, you get a DUI. In Utah, .05% isn't much so you definitely need to be more aware.

And, yes, if you drive like an idiot and blow less than .05% in Utah but you still had a drink, you can still be arrested for a DUI. This counts for anywhere else, too.

However, the Extreme DUI is if you register .16% BAC. Over three times the legal limit for Utah.

If this happens to you, the state of Utah will literally reissue you your drivers license with a red band that clearly states NO ALCOHOL SALES right on the license itself as shown in this Facebook post.

Best to, y'know, not get a DUI.

I could see other states like Washington starting this as well.
