Yakima Shooting Suspect in Stable Condition

A 21-year-old Yakima man continues to be treated at a Yakima hospital after being shot by Yakima Police Sunday following a low-speed chase in downtown Yakima.

Police say they first encountered the suspect Sunday morning

Yakima Police Capt. Jay Seely says police were first called to the 1200 block of South Ninth Avenue at about 10:45 am Sunday for a report of a man with a shotgun and a report he’d fired at a home in the area. Officers were also told the man stole a vehicle from a home in the neighborhood.

Soon after arriving in the area officers started to follow the man in the stolen car in the downtown area. The suspect then started driving the wrong way on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and in the area of Fifth Avenue and MLK Blvd. police say the suspect jumped out of the stolen vehicle and pointed a shotgun at officers. Officers fired at the suspect while at the same time another officer in a vehicle struck the suspect with his patrol car. The suspect was taken into custody and then transferred to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital where the suspect is listed in stable condition. Capt. Jay Seely says the suspect was known to officers as have mental problems.
As a result of the shooting two officers, an officer in training and a senior officer have been placed on administrative leave during an investigation of the incident.

The investigation continues today

Officers from the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit continue the investigation. The unit is made up of investigators from different agencies in the valley.
The suspects name has not been released. No officers were injured.
