Prosecutors Go After Yakima Man Who Pointed Gun at Police

Detectives from the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit continue to investigate an incident in which a man was shot by Yakima Police January 23 in downtown Yakima.

The 21-year-old suspect was in court earlier this week

21-year-old Moises Bello-Medina of Yakima has been charged with 1st Degree Unlawful possession of a firearm, Theft of a motor vehicle, attempt to elude law enforcement and 2nd Degree felony Assault for pointing a shotgun at two Yakima Police Officers. Yakima Police Capt. Jay Seely says police were first called to the 1200 block of South Ninth Avenue at about 10:45 am Sunday, January 23 for a report of a man with a shotgun and a report he'd fired at a home in the area. Officers were also told Bello-Medina stole a vehicle from a home in the neighborhood.

Police say they followed Bello-Medina and tried to take him into custody

Soon after arriving in the area officers started to follow the Bello-Medina in the stolen car in the downtown area.
He then started driving the wrong way on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and in the area of Fifth Avenue and MLK Blvd.  the Bello-Medino jumped out of the stolen vehicle and pointed a shotgun at officers. Officers fired at the him while at the same time another officer in a vehicle struck Bello-Medina with his patrol car. Bello-Medina was treated at a Yakima hospital and released. He's now being held in the Yakima County jail.
As a result of the shooting three officers remain on administrative leave during an investigation of the incident.
