Yakima Sure Could Use a Community Herb Garden, But Would It Work?
I love the community garden concept that anyone can take advantage of. Not only is it fun to watch your plants grow but others can utilize the availability like those who live in apartments who may not have access to grow their own herbs or plants.
The main issue, which I'm sure you've already thought of, is how safe it would be. Most community herb gardens in most cities are right out in the open. This one in the photo is in Spokane at Poly Judd Park. I also saw one in Fairbanks, Alaska, where it was just on a street corner in an abandoned lot. Great use for a vacant area! Place some sponsored planting areas and go for it. I could see Yakima doing that, too.
But how long would it take before they were vandalized? That weighs heavily on most as well. I think the location could play into this. Not sure if the Arboretum is the right answer, either, but would be nice if they had something like this at a park like Randall Park or Kissel Park.
Do you think something like this could happen in Yakima? I'd love to see it. Sound off on our station app.
