We hear stories about them ... they are quietly among us. They appear when needed then fade back into obscurity.

No, I'm not talking about superheroes, although you could call them modern-day superheroes.

They are good Samaritans. A couple of those good Samaritans helped my son recently.

My son Benjamin works at the Anacortes casino where my husband is general manager. Benjamin's girlfriend Hailey is here in Yakima, so when his shift ends at 10 Saturday night, he packs up and drives home to Yakima for his three days off.

Last Saturday night the snow started to fall over Snoqualmie Pass. Benjamin had taken the chains out of his older brother's car, but didn't really check whether they would actually fit. Keep in mind he drives an older Honda Civic.

He started to fishtail going 40 mph, so he slowed down to 25 and was still fishtailing. That's when he decided to try to chain up. He pulled out the chains from his brother's car and guess what? They didn't fit.

He phoned my husband, who told him to head back to the mini-mart in North Bend to purchase the correct size of chains.

By that time it was about 2 a.m. and pouring down rain in North Bend. He purchased the correct size chains and the gas station attendant told him to pull under the gas pump awning to put them on.

While he was trying to get the chains on his vehicle, a couple of guys from Sunnyside offered to help him. They got him all chained up and he made it home safely.

So, to the gas station attendant: Thank you. To the two guys who took the time to help an 18-year-old chain up his car: Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
