Deep Fried Sushi in Selah, WA? Don’t Knock It ’til You’ve Tried It
I try my best to be as culturally sensitive to food as much as I can. Like in Japan it's not nice to shove your chopsticks into your bowl of rice as a means to hold your chopsticks or, when you eat sushi, to pop the entire piece into your mouth. No biting and certainly no dismantling, just take the entire thing straight into your mouth in one go.
Then I see items on a menu like deep fried sushi which, at first, I have to give a side-eye on who would come up with such a thing. But, of course, I figured 'when in Rome', or Selah in this case, I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did.
We found ourselves at a place we all enjoy, Tailgaters Bar and Grill in Selah, Washington. They have your standard pub favorites like burgers, chicken strips, fish and chips and so much more. We really enjoy the food here. It's been a while since I've been here last and noticed they changed the menu a bit. One of the newer items is the Tailgaters Sushi Roll.
As it states on the menu:
Our own take on a sushi roll, sliced then deep fried. Served with smoky sriracha, ponzu and wasabi.
Honestly, I had no intention of trying this at first. I saw it, questioned it and moved on with my life. It wasn't under after we ordered our meals that one of my kids chimed in with wanting an order of the garlic butter and parmesan Outfield Fries. That's all it took for me to figure, since we were ordering appetizers all of a sudden, we may as well order the sushi, too.
I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved this. I know I'd like it and of course it'd be edible as I love sushi and love the food here so I knew they wouldn't do it dirty, but these were great.
And those Outfield fries were great, too.
And, naturally, everything is better with a 22oz local craft ale. This was a hazy IPA from Varietal.
