Yakima is no stranger to apples of all varieties.

Growing up I mostly remember seeing Red Delicious as kind of the basic apple. That's the apple people draw when someone draws a picture of an apple.

And then we have Granny Smith apples which are the green apples where so many apple-flavored items, like candy, are based on these with their extreme tartness.

I was at the store the other day and noticed these Lemonade Apples. Curiously, I hadn't heard of these.

When I go to buy apples I usually just go straight to the Honeycrisp or Cosmic Crisp and, sure, I walk by other apples, but must have been completely oblivious to these.

Today I decided to grab some to check out.

Where are Lemonade Apples from?

I felt a little dirty buying these. These are a product of New Zealand. As much as I love checking out items from other parts of the world, apples are kind of our thing. I mean, we have our apples on lock. Nobody does apples better than right here in the Yakima Valley so why would I even consider exploring outside of apple territory?

Well, because the gimmick of the lemonade had me too curious.
And the price was fine. It wasn't like I was paying a premium.

What do Lemonade Apples taste like?

This was my biggest disappointment. They didn't taste anything like lemonade.

We have cotton candy grapes that taste a little like cotton candy.

We've even had 'Grapples' that were apples soaked in grape juice so they had that kind of 'grape juice' taste to them.

These had the slightest hint of lemon rind when I first took a bite, but that was about it.

They are good. Not too tart, not too sweet, pretty much right down the middle. Crisp and juicy, they were good apples, but I was hoping for more of that lemonade tart taste to them.

I found these at Uwajimaya in Seattle but you can find Lemonade Apples at Safeway as well as I'm sure several other typical grocery stores in Washington State.
